Refund policy
This policy covers courses you buy on trainyourself.org, starting with Built to Spread, our viral marketing course, which comes with 12 months of access from the date of purchase. It explains (1) the refund we offer if you change your mind, and (2) your rights under consumer law, which this policy never limits.
1. Your rights under consumer law always apply
If you are in Australia:
Our services come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. For major failures with the service, you are entitled:
- to cancel your service contract with us; and
- to a refund for the unused portion, or to compensation for its reduced value.
You are also entitled to be compensated for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage. If the failure does not amount to a major failure, you are entitled to have problems with the service rectified in a reasonable time and, if this is not done, to cancel your contract and obtain a refund for the unused portion of the contract.
This is the wording the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) sets for services. Source: ACCC, Warranties.
What that means in plain terms. Under Australian law, a service must be provided with due care and skill and be fit for any purpose we state, and anything we say about it must be accurate (ACCC, Consumer rights and guarantees). For example, if the course is significantly different from how we described it, or doesn’t work and we can’t fix it within a reasonable time, you can ask for a remedy under these rights (ACCC, Repair, replace, refund, cancel).
These rights are separate from our change-of-mind refund in section 2. None of the conditions in sections 2 and 3 apply to them: not the 14-day window, not the 20% progress limit, and not unlocking or downloading the packs. That holds whether you’re in Australia, the UK, the US or anywhere else. The consumer protection laws where you live may give you rights too, and nothing in this policy limits them.
If you’re in the UK, you also have rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 for digital content and services, and under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 (see section 4). (To be confirmed.)
If you’re in the US, you may have additional rights under the laws of your state. (To be confirmed.)
2. Change-of-mind refunds (our policy)
Consumer law doesn’t require a refund just because you change your mind (ACCC), but we offer one:
You can ask for a full refund within 14 days of purchase, as long as you’ve completed less than 20% of the course and haven’t unlocked or downloaded any prompt or template pack (see section 3).
The change-of-mind window ends at whichever of these comes first: (a) 14 days after purchase, (b) completing 20% of the course, or (c) unlocking or downloading any prompt or template pack.
- “Completed” means the share of lessons marked complete in your account, as shown on your progress page.
- The 14 days start on the date on your receipt.
- One change-of-mind refund per person per course.
3. The prompt and template packs
Built to Spread includes downloadable packs: the prompt library, the templates and the capstone workbook. Once you have a file, it can’t be “returned,” so the packs are treated differently from the lessons for change-of-mind refunds only.
The packs unlock when you start Module 2. Until then you can work through the Module 1 lessons and still use the change-of-mind refund in section 2. Once you unlock or download any part of a prompt or template pack, the change-of-mind refund no longer applies, even if you’re still inside 14 days and under 20%. Before the packs unlock, we’ll show a message asking you to confirm. The STEPPS scorecard from open lesson 1.1 doesn’t count.
This condition never affects your consumer-law rights in section 1. If the course or the packs have a major failure, or aren’t as described, you can still claim a remedy.
Licence for the packs
The packs are licensed to you for your own personal and internal business use. You can’t resell, share or redistribute them. If your course is refunded for any reason, your licence to the packs ends, and you must delete any copies you downloaded. (Wording to be confirmed.)
4. If you’re in the UK or EU: the 14-day cancellation right
(To be confirmed.) For online digital content and services, UK law generally gives you 14 days to cancel. If you ask us to start supplying digital content during those 14 days and confirm you understand you’ll lose that right, the right to cancel ends once supply begins (Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, reg. 37). At checkout we’ll ask for that consent with a box you tick yourself; it’s never pre-ticked. We confirm your choice in your receipt email. Our change-of-mind policy in sections 2 and 3 still applies as described.
5. How to ask for a refund
- Email [email protected] with “Refund request” in the subject, or use our contact page.
- Include the email address you bought with, your receipt or order number, and the course name.
- Tell us whether it’s a change-of-mind request (section 2) or a problem with the course (section 1). For a problem, a short description helps us fix it or sort out a remedy. You don’t have to use any particular words.
We’ll reply within a set number of business days (to be confirmed).
6. How long refunds take
- Once a refund is approved, we process it back to the card or payment method you paid with, unless we agree otherwise (processing time to be confirmed).
- Your bank or card issuer then usually takes about 5–10 business days to show the credit. That part is up to them (Stripe, Refunds).
- Change-of-mind refunds are for the full amount you paid. Refunds for a problem with the course are worked out under your consumer-law rights (section 1).
- When a refund is processed, your course access and pack licence end (section 3).
7. Card disputes and chargebacks
If something’s wrong, please contact us first. It’s usually the fastest way to get it fixed or refunded.
You can still dispute a charge with your bank or card issuer; this policy doesn’t take that right away. If a dispute is opened, we may share relevant records with the payment processor, such as the purchase, the terms shown at checkout, course progress and pack downloads. Access to the course and packs is paused while the dispute is open, and ends if the charge is reversed. (To be confirmed.)
